Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, meaning that it cannot be synthesised in the body and must be obtained from the diet. DL-phenylalanine (DLPA) is a nutritional supplement with two different forms of phenylalanine in equal amounts; D-phenylalanine and L-phenylalanine. These are known in chemistry as 'stereoisomers' - meaning that the molecular orientation of the two forms are mirror images of each other. This gives the two 'isomers' differing properties.
L-phenylalanine is the active form in the human body and is involved in the building of neurotransmitters such as dopamine and noradrenaline that control mood, mental health and other vital functions. D-phenylalanine is the synthetic form and although our bodies cant use it as a building block, it produces specific health effects.
The body converts about one-third of the D-phenylalanine into the L-form, while the remaining two-thirds is unchanged and has unique effects. It is thought that D-phenylalanine may increase natural opioids and enkephalins and thereby promote pain relief.
